The Hunt for Red (hot)(dirt)(centre) October

  ( A Von Blog).  Gosh, it's been a while! I have been giving this blog some thought during our massive driving days and, of course, before we/I know it we are back in NSW.  Where did October go to? Why the big break between blogs? It was hot, damn hot, up north.  So hot in fact that even raising a hand to type one solitary letter would be a movement too much...   Yes, that really does say 47 degrees... I have been reflecting on how many fantastic people we have met during our travels. Some we have got to know better (mainly via Facebook!) and some have just been fleeting conversations in rest areas, car parks, van stops, caravan sites and everywhere in between.   "I'm Paul and this is Linda, as in McCartney, or Hogan" is what prompted my thoughts. Krackin' Kimberley

  "'ave yer seen me friend? she's really, really tall, she's got bits o' ceilin' stuck in 'er 'air"; this bit of comedy genius was what I thought of when I heard the name 'Kimberley'.  In the last few weeks however, we have witnessed ' The Kimberley' in all her glory.   Firstly, some factoids: - 423,517 square kilometres or, to put it another way, 3 times the size of England or slightly smaller than California - first peopled about 40,000 years ago but the neighbourhood went downhill about 250 years ago when some Europeans arrived  - there are 4 LGAs (Local Government Area - a name most people from NSW are becoming too aware of). Broome, Derby (West Kimberley), Halls Creek and Wyndham (East Kimberley) - population (in the 2016 Census) 34,794 but we are guessing this number almost doubled in the height of this years travelling season - 40% of the population are indigenous with 50-60 different aboriginal languages spoken - economy is

Flora and Fauna Fables

  'Hoo-Roo' loyal readers. Yes yes it's been a while; a blessing maybe?  Look away now .... but yes the heat has sapped the energy! And I've had to wrestle the laptop away from Von and run across the campsite to our dear friends' air-conditioned caravan! Dennis spotted this plan and is currently sprawled out next to me. Jenny & Ronni have gone up to Cape Leveque for the night as they also have a 4wd and a tent, hence the caravan being available!  I had a dilemma as to the topic for today. I'm conscious that too much information about the hot sunny weather, the white sandy beaches, and the blue blue sea might just tip all those currently in 'Lockdowns' over the edge. As it is, those on Facebook are suffering our beach-fest anyway, together with our weekly singing spot. We have wandered further up the West Coast of Australia and are currently in Broome; so from the Pilbara Region to the edge of the Kimberley. Along this route we have encountered much f
